The way a text is written can expand or close your horizons

A story from the magazine Mackerel, entitled Shadowland, has been used. The text on the left has been fully modified, using the text on the right, the original, as a reference.

The difference between an unproofread text (image on the left) and the same proofread text (image on the right) can be seen here. Perhaps the first thing that jumps out at you when you see the image on the left is the number of misspellings.

But if you look more closely, you will notice that there are also more mistakes. You can also see how in the corrected version of the text, the misspellings have been corrected, and the vocabulary has been enriched.

I guess it must’ve been tough for you to follow the thread of the story in the text on the left. A text riddled with mistakes and incomprehensible sentences is difficult to read and tarnishes the author’s reputation.

In an ever-changing world, where speed and improvisation are the order of the day, precision is a trait that shouldn’t be missed. Proofreading texts, whether original or translated, ensures perfection and accuracy. I’ll make sure that the final text is free of errors and sounds natural.

Both proofreading and editing processes are all-important to ensure the quality of the final product because quality is synonymous with knowledge. As the saying goes, four eyes see more than two. It’s not enough for an author to know how to write properly. It’s always recommended to be right behind a professional proofreader that can check your text.

It entails looking for grammatical, punctuation, orthographic, and syntactic errors. The main goal is to improve and enrich the document I’m working on to make sure it’s coherent and cohesive.

All corrections will be made with the version control so that you have the last say.

Which texts can be corrected?

Types of editing

Based on what we want to accomplish and the author's own intention, there’re different approaches to editing texts

The cornerstone of all corrections, all texts need it. This sort of editing looks for errors of all types, including spelling, typographical, linguistic and grammatical. With it, I provide uniformity to the text and make sure it’s free of errors by addressing issues such as bold, italics, double spaces, full stops, inverted commas, footnotes, capital letters, commas, numbers, abbreviations, acronyms and quotations, among others.

Here I focus on the syntax of sentences and readability, so that the final text flows well and doesn’t cause the reader to stumble. In order to obtain a clearly written and high-quality text, confusing and erroneous sentences will be reformulated, as will ambiguities and unnecessary words and word repetitions, and special attention will be paid to see if there are any missing or surplus connectors.

This is the final stage of the translation cycle. It works as quality control, and it’s done to ensure that there aren’t any translation errors, whether it be in register, terminology, style, etc. Another translator, different from the one who has first translated, will proofread the text.

For which texts is proofreading suitable?

As explained in the previous section, this is done, checking the translated text as if it were an original text.

I ensure that the terms used by the translator are the best choice and sound as natural as feasible.

The source text is compared with the translation to eliminate errors, inconsistencies, or different meanings.
